Clinical Coding Workshop

Manchester November 24th 2017.

Introduction

This second IHRIM workshop focused on implementing future changes to the way clinical coding is done in the NHS especially the changes to ICD11 and Snomed, but also the way in which clinicians are engaged to ensure high quality and accurate clinical data is collected and used.

Sean reviewed the evolution of health records over the centuries focussing on the changes underway currently to create a paperlight, digital record and considered the clinical coding issues that this created

 

Coding Fundamentals for Casemix

Jill Cockrill Head of the National Casemix Office, NHS Digital 

Described the reasons for coding and the isues associated with it as it changes re Snomed CT and ICD11 with the implications for the HRG++

 

Clinician and Clinical Coder Joint Working for Improvement

Alison Unsworth Divisional Clinical Coding Lead – Medicine,  

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust

Coding should not be done in isolation in basements. A good relationship with clincians is essentail to ensure timely and accurate clinical data is recorded and Alison descriobed her Trust’s approach to it.

 

FedIP (Federation of Informatics Professionals) what is it and what does it mean for me?

Jeremy Barlow Director of Standards, British Computer Society

FedIP replaces UKCHIP as a register for people working in Informatics (ie anyone working with creating/managing or using information).

IHRIM members undertake a number of roles under the Informatics umbrella term and therefore should be interested in what registering with FedIP means for them.

Gareth Jones Clinical Coding Improvement Manager,

Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Gareth described his Trust’s approach to ensuring the clinical coding was of the highest quality and described processes to put in place to ensure this

 

 

The latest developments with ICD11 and other coding classifications

including the ICD11 Classification field trials

 Jayne Harding Senior Classification Specialist, NHS Digital

Jayne updated the audience on the impending (but not next year) implementation of the ICD 11 and what these changes would mean to Trusts

Summary

 

A varied and interesting programme was enjoyed by IHRIM members and non-members alike.

 

It was considered a good location by all but one attendee and was considered of value to 83% of those who completed the evaluation. Liverpool was considered to be a preferred alternative (76%) if another ‘Up North IHRIM workshop’ was planned.
